Book review: The blue umbrella

I bought this book as a pastime while waiting to board my bus to Hubli from Bangalore railway station. The cover picture looked as if it was exquisitely handcrafted for me to pick it up!

After finding my love for short stories through chicken soup for the soul series, I loved Ruskin bond's short stories and dint think twice before picking up this little book.

Its always a warm feeling to read Ruskin's work which lingers around the mountains weaved with subtle feelings of daily life. He ha the power of turning extraordinary events into a beautiful story. In this particular book he goes about a young girl who earns an umbrella in the mountains from a tourist. Through his vivid description of the places and characters, he explains how this beautiful blue umbrella quickly becomes a priced possession and the envy it creates amongst the villagers who try to acquire umbrella from young girl Binni.

Describing through how little Binni had to go though the turmoils to keep the umbrella safe, the story ends with a message of compassion which over-weighs the young girl's mind and makes her to give away the priceless possession she had.

A very heart warming quick read over coffee time in a breezy balcony with a great cup of tea 😊😊.
